Literacy
My First grade students are learning to read using an exciting program called Letterland. We have met characters who represent every letter and sounds. Annie Apple helps us learn about the sound for a, it is the sound you hear at the beginning of the words Annie and Apple, when we see Annie we make the motion like we are eating an apple, and say /ah/. Mr. Apron man shows us that he makes the sound of his own name: /ay/, and when he says his own name he raises his hand high in the air! We learn motions for every sound and read fun stories about the Letterland characters. It is exciting to read stories and write about all the fun times the characters experience in Letterland. There are songs we sing for every sound and we also sing handwriting songs as we write letters in the air and on our papers. Parents may find apps by going to Letterland.com, and your children can have fun practicing their reading skills at home!
Our students in all grades love to read stories on the Raz kids site. After every story there are questions to answer. They strive to get at least 80% correct, but it is so exciting to get 100% correct. They can even access Raz Kids at home, and add points to their account. There are lessons which accompany every story and I utilize these lesson often to increase reading decoding and comprehension skills.
We have many activities in the Resource room which meet our students' specific needs. Students may work on a center activity or computer program which strengthens their reading skills. The students enjoy playing learning games together. They have fun interacting with each other as they practice a variety of reading skills.
